Our Story
THERE ARE PLACES WE ARRIVE AT AS IF, SOMEHOW, THEY HAD ALWAYS BELONGED TO US.
In 2026, Herdade da Saudade entered a new chapter in the hands of those who had long belonged to this landscape, giving it a future without erasing its past.
It was acquired by the Moreira de Sousa family, owners of the surrounding estates, and became part of a story now spanning four generations.
The family’s roots lie in Lisbon and the Serra do Açor. The Alentejo came later. First as a discovery, then as a return, and finally as a sense of belonging. Because some lands are inherited, while others, without us quite knowing when, simply become part of who we are.
At the heart of this story is Herdade do Almargem. The mother estate.
With the arrival of Herdade da Saudade, four neighbouring properties now come together, forming more than one thousand hectares connected by the same landscape and the same way of caring for it.
A living landscape shaped by working land, animals, old trees, water and granite. And also by a much older memory: this region is marked by one of the richest and oldest megalithic cultures in Europe, whose traces can also be found across the family’s estates, in ancient dolmens, great granite outcrops and marks left in stone over thousands of years.
Here, time has not stopped. It has simply learned not to hurry.
Over four generations, Herdade do Almargem has developed its own way of living with the land: respecting its cycles, caring for what endures and leaving each generation with the responsibility of passing on something better than it received.
That is its true seal of quality.
A quiet sense of exacting care. Something felt in the details, in the way the land is worked, preserved and shared.
It is this spirit that now reaches Herdade da Saudade.
Not to erase what was already here, but to carry it forward. To preserve what deserves to remain, recover what time has hidden, and add comfort and beauty without taking away what makes this place true.

Perhaps that is also what a four-generation story is made of: affection, continuity and the quiet loyalty certain landscapes are able to awaken in us.
For the Moreira de Sousa family, the Alentejo ceased long ago to be simply a place.
It is memory. It is future. It is home.
And Herdade da Saudade is now part of that home.
